Exhibit and Special Events

Presented by the Walnut Creek Library Foundation

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Walnut Creek Library Foundation and Walnut Creek Library partnered with the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office and the National Constitution Center (NCC) in Philadelphia on a new exhibit, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War.” The exhibition is traveling to select cities around the country from 2009 through 2015. Walnut Creek was one of those select cities.

“Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” ran from December 14, 2012, through February 8, 2013, at the Walnut Creek Library. Seven special companion events were held during the exhibit’s run.

Future exhibit sites – The exhibit will be at the Museum on Main/Amador-Livermore Valley Historical Society, in Pleasanton June 12 – July 26, 2013; and the Museum of San Ramon Valley in Danville March 18 – May 1, 2015. See the full schedule online.

The seven programs and events were attended by more than 1,600 people. A few programs were filmed by Walnut Creek TV and Contra Costa TV and can be viewed below.

Songs & Poetry of the Civil War

This moving program at the Walnut Creek Library highlighted the personal stories of the Civil War through popular wartime anthems and the poetry of some of the most prolific and profound Civil War-era writers.

Vikram Amar – A Nation Divided

UC Davis Constitutional Law Professor Vikram Amar presented Lincoln’s views on partisanship, states’ rights, and the institutional role of the Supreme Court and exploreed what lessons Lincoln’s approach might have for the modern era.
