Our Local Libraries

Walnut Creek has two public libraries that serve its residents – the Walnut Creek Downtown Library and the Ygnacio Valley Library. Both libraries are part of the 24-branch Contra Costa County Library. In addition, the Rossmoor Books-to-Go Program provides a book-delivery service for residents of Rossmoor.

Walnut Creek Downtown Library

Walnut Creek LibraryThe Walnut Creek Downtown library closed on November 30th in preparation for its demolition prior to construction of the new downtown library. The library will operate in Park Place located at the corner of Civic and Broadway while the new facility is being built. Park Place will provide a place where patrons may request and receive books, use computers, and find children's books .

The interim Walnut Creek Park Place Library opened on January 2, 2008 with the same open hours as the current building, and will primarily offer downtown library customers a place to pick up their requests. There are four public computers for Internet access and several free 30-minute parking spots on Civic Drive at Broadway dedicated to library customers. Free delivery service to Rossmoor residents will continue during construction and is expected to increase.

The Friends of the Walnut Creek Library will open their new bookstore on February 4th. Located at 1910 Olympic Blvd., Suite 101, the store will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. There is free parking in the rear of the building. The Friends will have for sale used books, both fiction and non-fiction, books on tape, music, and films.

Ygnacio Valley Library

Ygnacio Valley LibraryThe Ygnacio Valley Library was opened in 1975 to serve the rapidly growing neighborhoods of the Ygnacio Valley. The library was made possible through a generous contribution of land and money by Mr. and Mrs. Thurman G. Casey, who once owned the property.

In 2004, the Walnut Creek Library Foundation raised more than $180,000 to renovate the Ygnacio Valley Library. Read more about the project . . .
