Rachel Howzell Hall: A Woman of Mysteries

Join us as we host award-winning mystery writer Rachel Howzell Hall, a prolific author of mystery novels that include a series featuring Detective Elouise “Lou” Norton, an African-American homicide detective, and her latest thriller, These Toxic Things. Mystery writer and host David Corbett will engage Howzell Hall in a conversation about her writings and experiences as a Los Angeles-area mystery writer.
A native of Los Angeles, Howzell Hall is a graduate of UC Santa Cruz with a degree in English and American literature. In 2002, her debut novel, A Quiet Storm, was chosen as a “Gilmore Book Club” selection, the must-read book list of fictional character Rory Gilmore of The Gilmore Girls. She is best known for writing the bestselling They All Fall Down and as the creator and writer of the Lou Norton series of mysteries. In addition to writing, Howzell Hall is on the board of directors for the Southern California chapter of Mystery Writers of America and was a featured writer on NPR’s acclaimed ‘Crime in the City’ series and the National Endowment for the Arts weekly podcast.
David Corbett is the author of six novels, including The Long-Lost Love Letters of Doc Holliday, nominated for the Lefty Award for Best Historical Mystery. Corbett’s short fiction has twice been selected for Best American Mystery Stories. He has also written two writing guides, The Art of Character and The Compass of Character; and has taught at UCLA’s LitReactor Writer’s Program and writing conferences across North America.
