Author Talk – Steve Sheinkin on the History of the Port Chicago 50 Navy Sailors

February 24, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

For Teens and Tweens.

In observation of Black History Month, Newbery Honor Winner and National Book Award Finalist, author Steve Sheinkin, will be on hand to talk about his book, The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny and the Fight For Civil Rights. Join us for this fascinating story about Navy Sailors Joe Small, Freddie Meeks, Robert Edwards and Percy Robinson, who are just a few of the 50 unsung heroes who fought for their county and their civil rights.

Also joining us will be National Park Service Rangers who will talk about how you can visit Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial, one of America’s least visited national parks. “Our site memorializes those who lost their lives in the disaster on July 17, 1944 and commemorates the bravery of the Port Chicago 50.”
